Wire Your Brain For GratitudeNovember 27, 2014
Quick Tip: Holiday Fun At Work—And Engages the BrainDecember 15, 2014
While we may not be able to eliminate our entire list of responsibilities, we can monitor our energy. Like hours in a day, our energy seems finite – but it doesn’t have to be that way. We are all powerful creators of our lives. By taking 3 minutes out of your day to recall a portion of your spent energy, you will be amazed at how much you can accomplish. First, let’s look at why your brain needs energy.
Your Brain Needs Energy
Our brain cells require up to two times more energy than any of the other cells in our entire body. Our neurons are so busy communicating with each other that they have a massive high demand for energy. They are creating neurotransmitters that are transported up to several feet away–and guess what? Brain cells don’t take naps or vacation days. Our entire body relies on transmissions that are formed by the neurons in our brain, and communication throughout our nervous system eats up the most energy by consuming up to one-half of our entire brain’s energy. The question is: how can we provide more energy to our brain?
Studies show the importance of sleep, meditation and rest for the brain. A recent article in Scientific American Neuroscience Reveals The Secrets Of Meditation’s Benefits states: “Downtime replenishes the brain’s stores of attention and motivation, encourages productivity and creativity, and is essential to both achieve our highest levels of performance and simply form stable memories in everyday life.” Simply put, we need to feed and rest our brain.
Now that we know why your brain needs energy, next let’s talk about leverage.
Leverage Your Energy
There are powerful tools that I use with my executive coaching clients that allow them to leverage and recall their energy. They don’t suffer from burnout and they have the energy to lead both fulfilling professional and personal lives. Let’s look at tools to leverage your energy.
Are you aware of the impact of OPE (other peoples energy) in your life? You can best leverage your energy (spend less energy and get better results) by helping your team members know what you need and expect. Stop repeating yourself, maximize your meetings and ensure that everyone is on the same page. Think about how much energy you will save when you invest it wisely in your team. I’ve used the Outcome Frame with all of our clients and this is a key part in leveraging your energy to maximize results. Ditch, delegate and defer as often as possible. Your team will rise up and own their projects. You will see higher quality work and your team will be deeply engaged and committed. You will accomplish more, while investing less.
The key is to combine leveraging energy with recalling energy. Our Energy Recall Process is the tool that will show you how.
Recall Your Energy
We all place energy out in the world – in people, places, projects. We place energy generally in an attempt to get something accomplished (a key colleague to help them get a project for us or our partner to get them to do what we want). Another time we place energy is when we have a negative judgment about someone – in that case we’ll push our energy out to them to try to make them change.
The trouble is we often leave our energy where we placed it—even when its purpose is complete. Countless executive coaching clients of ours have done this Energy Recall Process only to find they still had energy in former coworkers from years ago!
Close your eyes. See a large golden sun about 4 feet above your head. This is your energy. Now in your mind’s eye flick a switch and notice the sun is now magnetic. Ask it to call back your energy from wherever you have placed it: in other people, physical locations, specific projects, maybe you even placed it in your calendar. Many people see the energy coming back in discs, like pancakes or Frisbees, others see it as streaming energy or light.
Regardless of the form the energy takes, track where it came from—where had you placed it? You can do this by “looking” at who is at the other end of the returning energy. If you see energy as a disc, flip the recalled energy disc over—can you see what is written on the back? Is it someone’s name or a location or project? See the energy stream or disc rejoining your sun and merging back into it.
When you understand how much energy you are putting out and to whom, you will understand why you sometimes feel drained. Then you can work with your executive coach on putting energy into the positive alternative, the Relationship Bubble, which is the third part in each relationship—the “us.” For every relationship something is being created, the merger of the two people, the joint “project.” When you put your energy there, and not directly into the person, you will not feel drained.
Once your energy is recalled, flip a switch on the sun and see the energy in the form of golden light pouring down into you and over you until you’re solid golden light. Then see it radiating off of you to your office, town, state, country, and the globe.
Enjoy your recalled energy!
