When I was 29 years old, I started a technology consulting firm that helped Fortune 1000 companies convert their systems to Microsoft Windows. This was in the early 90’s, when companies suddenly wanted to embrace Windows.
But it wasn’t going well. Prospects were being extremely wishy-washy, and I had been rejected 35 times in a row. So I decided to watch some of the competitor’s sales people to try and figure out what I was doing wrong. What did they talk about after meetings? Is there a secret code? A secret language or handshake?
After that 35th rejection, I sat in my car in the parking lot. As the competition walked out of a meeting with the very same sales prospect who’d said “no” to me but an hour ago, I looked at him closely…
And it hit me: I don’t look the part. I don’t have glasses. I don’t have a wedding ring. I don’t have a navy blue suit. And my hair’s out of control. My prospects don’t trust me because they don’t feel comfortable with me! So I bought myself a fake wedding ring and some fake glasses. I pinned my hair back and I bought a navy blue suit. And you guessed it–I started closing sales left and right.
When I realized that the way I looked wasn’t working, it was a harsh dose of reality. And the same thing applies in your business. Sometimes you have to look down deep and decide whether you want to keep going the same route, or whether you want to make a change and reinvent yourself.
So this week, think about those issues that aren’t working. Examine competitors that are successful and see what you’re missing. Then make a decision and take action immediately! Once you do, you’ll find your road to success to be much smoother and more prosperous.
But you can’t make it happen unless you visualize the person you want to be, set your intentions, then get out of your own way!
